WELCOME TO THE BDA MUSEUM NECKTIE ARCHIVES

Welcome to the British Dental Association Museum Dental Necktie Archive – a unique, open access, history of dentistry resource.

The Archive is believed to be the largest collection of dental neckties in the world, with the information pertaining to each tie collectively providing many different insights into the last 100 years of the history of dentistry.

Neckties (ties), specifically ties indicating an affiliation, i.e., ‘club’ ties, are worn much less frequently than used to be the case. Indeed, many view ties as no longer a male adornment, to be worn only, if at all, at formal and other special occasions only. Wearing a ‘club’ tie, with some notable exceptions, is increasingly considered to be old fashioned, if not undesirable, possibly even misogynist. As such, many ‘club’ ties, most popular during the second half of the twentieth century, now languish in the back of wardrobes or tie drawers, and are at risk of being discarded the next time the owner has a ‘clear out’. Now is the time to save dental ties for posterity.

Work on the Archive is anticipated to continue well into the future, hopefully with many more new additions and new information on the individual ties. Indeed, in all probability, the Archive may never be complete. So, please return to this website from time to time to see what is new and discover what you may do to add to this unique, ‘work-in-progress’ resource.
