Bristol University Dental Students Society
Bristol University Dental Students Society dates back to c1921. The main reason for forming the Society may have been to coordinate student discontent about clinical facilities. The Society lapsed during World War II, at the time of the opening a new dental school in 1940. The Society was however, 're-born' in 1942 with JVRB Gibson as President. The Society tie came into beingin 1972. The pelican (no link to puking pelicans' included in University Hospital London ties, or the pelicans forming part of the motif of the University College Dublin Dental Student Society tie - see below) sitting on the inverted pelican extraction forceps logo was created by Steve Lisney, now Emeritus Professor Lisney, former Head of the University Department of Physiology - the only dentaly qualified person to become Dean of the University's Faculty of Medicine. He created the logo when he was Editor of the Bristol Dental Students Society (1972-1974) to feature on a new front cover of the Society magazine - 'The Mouthpiece'. The pelican in the logo was not selected for any of the mythological significance of pelicans, including wisdom, humility, charity and generosity. The link is simply to the pelican forceps, presumably favoured in Bristol at the time.
