The BDSA and British Dental Association are two separate organisations that work closely together. It is understood that the original BDSA tie was designed by Professor N A (Tony) Naylor at Guy's Dental Hospital in 1957. A subsequent design of BDSA tie was introduced in the 1980s. The exmaple of the original BDSA tie in the Archive was presented in thanks to one of the co-organisers (Iain Corran) of the 1980 BDSA Summer conference
