Eastman Postgraduate Institute
Eastman Postgraduate Institute. In 1926 the American innovator, entrepreneur. Eastman had previously funded a dental dispensary devoted to the oral health of
children in his home town of Rochester, New York. The Eastman Dental Centre in
London, opened on 20 November 1931 with Neville Chamberlain and the American
Ambassador in attendance, was part of the Royal Free Hospital. The clinic was
committed to providing dental care for disadvantaged children in central London,
together with programmes of instruction in dentistry for children. In 1948, the
‘Eastman’, then housed in buildings which had formed part of the barracks of the
London and Westminster Light Horse Volunteers, became independent of the Royal Free
Hospital and its teaching arm became the Postgraduate Dental Institute of the
Postgraduate Medical Federation. In 1996, the ‘Eastman’ joined University College
London, with the Eastman Dental Hospital becoming part of UCL Hospital Trust. The
‘Eastman tie’ dates back to 1996.
