Guy's Hospital
Guy’s Hospital, including Guy’s Dental Hospital. Guy’s Hospital was founded in 1721 by philanthropist Thomas Guy, who made his fortune as a printer of bibles. The purpose of
Guy’s Hospital was to treat “incurable” patients discharged by St Thomas’ Hospital. A course in dental surgery was first given at Guy’s in 1855 by Thomas Bell FRS FRCS. Guy’s
Dental Hospital opened in 1885, followed by the dental school in 1889, thanks to vigorous campaigning by Fredrick Newland Pedley MRCS LDS (Dental Hospital of London
1880), who became a tremendous benefactor to the school. The Guy’s Hospital navy with orange stripe tie was first produced as a knitted silk tie (19708 – condition, worn). This
tie was replaced in the early 60’s with a ‘crimplene’ version (21025.1, condition - good). Alternatively, Guy’s men could opt to wear the blue tie decorated with multiple Guy’s
crests (21026, condition - worn).
