Kings College Hospital
ing’s College Hospital King’s College Hospital, often referred to as “King’s” was opened
in 1840 in the disused St Clements Danes workhouse in Portugal Street, London, close to
King’s College London and the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Joseph Lister
performed the first major, elective surgery under strict antiseptic conditions in the
hospital in 1877. Also, “King’s” was one of the first hospital in England to provide formal
training of nurses. Following an Act of Parliament in 1904 work started on a new King’s
College Hospital in Denmark Hill, Camberwell, in the London Borough of Lambeth, where
the hospital, now a major trauma centre, continues to grow and develop. The hospital
tie which may be worn by all, past and present, medically and dentally qualified staff and senior management of the hospital celebrates the 150th
anniversary of the founding of the hospital.
