London Inter-hospital London to Brighton Stroll - green
The first London inter-hospital walk occurred in 1955 when a group of medical students "temporarily unhinged by the imminence of their finals" wanted to do something different. The "stroll", as the overnight walk became known in 1960, gained sponsorship from Guinness Ltd in 1959, in keeping with the company's aim, at the time, to maintain close ties with the medical profession. Co-sponsorship was gained from the Ovaltine Company, which provided sustenance to the strollers along the A23 route. The stroll came to an end in 1967 following a fatal accident in which a medical student lost his life. This, however was not the end of the London inter- hospital walks to raise funds for charity - the Guinness Grand Union Canal Medical Meander (see above) being established in 1969. "Stroll ties and scaves for ladies were sold at post-stroll dinners to those who completed the walk. It is understood that up to six different colours of the tie may have been produced - green for first time walkers (19975.4-condition worn), together with matching scarf (21842- condition, good) hard- earned in 1962 by Cindy Brown) with a different colour e.g grey (20356.5-condition, good) for the completion of subsequent 'strolls'.
