Manchester University Dental Hospital elephant tie
Manchester University Dental Hospital. This tie was known by generations of Manchester dental students as the ‘blood’ (the maroon-red background), ‘pus’ (yellow stripe) and ‘caries’ (black highlighting of the yellow stripes) tie. An alternative to the Manchester University Dental Hospital tie in the 1970s was a Manchester Dental Hospital ‘elephant tie ‘ the pair of art deco elephants depicted on this blue tie being the motif of the hospital, originally named after Sir Samuel Turner, Manchester industrialist and philanthropist who was a major benefactor in the development of the hospital and school. The elephants, originally fashioned in wrought iron and displayed above the front entrance to the hospital building, were the idiomatic emblem of the architect of the building – Sir Hubert Wilkinson. A maroon version of this tie, with a single elephant -the elephant on the left of the insignia, was produced to mark the centenary of the hospital in 1983. During the 1960s, Manchester Dental Student Society produced a tie decorated with multiple white elephants but not elephants of the art deco design in the hospital insignia.
