Sutherland Dental School.
Dental education commenced in Newcastle in 1895. The dental school was affiliated with the College of Medicine in 1911. In 1937, the College of Medicine, including the dental school, united with the mainly science-based Armstrong College to form King’s College, Newcastle upon Tyne, in the University of Durham. King’s College was absorbed into Newcastle University in 1963. The dental school was named the Sutherland Dental School in honour of Sir Arthur Munro Sutherland, shipowner and philanthropist, who was a major benefactor in the provision of the third and fourth buildings for the dental school, opened in 1931 and 1948 respectively. The use of this name was dropped when King’s College, including the dental school was absorbed into Newcastle University in 1963. The shield in the original Sutherland Dental School tie (22100.1 – condition, worn) is taken from Sir Arthur’s coat of arms. The later version of the Sutherland Dental School tie (19940.3 – condition, good) includes the largely white shield of the University of Durham College of Medicine and the shield taken from the coat of arms of the King’s College, Newcastle upon Tyne. These arms became the arms of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1963.
