Temple University
The Temple University tie (21933.1 -condition, new) and scarf featuring the owl insignia of the University (21933.2 – condition, new) is worn by faculty and students of the Kornberg School of Dentistry, Philadelphia, originally the Philadelphia Dental College founded in 1863. The Philadelphia College of Dentistry merged with Temple College in 1907. The owl has been the symbol and mascot for Temple University since it was founded in the 1880s. The owl – a nocturnal hunter, was adopted because Temple began as a night school for young people of limited means. Russell Conwell, Temple’s founder, encouraged his students with the remark: “The owl of the night becomes the eagle of the day”.
