University College Dublin Dental Students Society (19949.5 – condition, worn) The pelican included in the motif in this tie surmounts an extraction pelican, first mentioned in 1363 and by the sixteenth century was the main extraction tool favoured by itinerant tooth-drawers. The extraction pelican was so named given the resemblance of the claw to the instrument to the beak of a pelican.
