University of Newcastle Dental Graduates Association
Dental education commenced in Newcastle in 1895. The dental school was affiliated with the College of Medicine in 1911. In 1937, the College of Medicine, including the dental school, united with the mainly science-based Armstrong College to form King’s College, Newcastle upon Tyne, in the University of Durham. King’s College was absorbed into Newcastle University in 1963. The dental school was named the Sutherland Dental School in honour of Sir Arthur Munro Sutherland, shipowner and philanthropist, who was a major benefactor in the provision of the third and fourth buildings for the dental school, opened in 1931 and 1948 respectively. The use of this name was dropped when King’s College, including the dental school was absorbed into Newcastle University in 1963. The coat of arms in the tie (20354.2 – condition, worn) was the heraldic achievement granted to Sir Arthur.
