The Faculty of Dentistry of the Witwatersrand (Wits) University was founded in 1926. In 1997 the Faculty became the School of Oral Health Sciences, as a joint member of the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University and the Gauteng Department of Health. The school is located in the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. The insignia on the tie (20360.2 – condition, worn) depicts an image of St Apollonia, one of the virgin martyrs and patroness of dentistry, holding, in her left hand, the instrument of torture used to violently remove or shatter all of her teeth and, in her right hand the scriptures she would not denounce.
